China's Smartphone Shipments Fell 21% In The First Quarter Only Millet Huawei Rose
Apr 27, 2018
According to foreign media reports, market research firm Canalys reported on Thursday that shipments of the Chinese smartphone market fell by 21% year-on-year to 94 million units in the first quarter, setting a record for single-quarter declines.
Canalys said in the report that among the top 10 smartphone manufacturers in the Chinese market, only Huawei and Xiaomi's first-quarter shipments rose; Jinli, Meizu, and Samsung Electronics' shipments both fell by more than 50%.
According to Canalys, Huawei continued to be the leading Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter. The company shipped 21 million smartphones in the Chinese market during the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 2% and accounted for 22% of the market. OPPO and vivo ranked second and third respectively. The shipments of the two companies both fell by about 10% to 18 million and 15 million. After giving up the fourth position in the market to Apple in 2017, Xiaomi re-squeezed Apple in the first quarter and ranked fourth in the Chinese smartphone market. Xiaomi's shipments in the quarter increased 37% year-on-year to 12 million.
Currently, the top four manufacturers in the Chinese smartphone market are local manufacturers, which together accounted for more than 73% of the market share in the first quarter. Apple currently ranks fifth in the Chinese market, with a market share of approximately 8%. With the exception of the top five vendors, the remaining companies collectively accounted for only 19% of the Chinese smartphone market. Canalys believes that in the current market environment, it is expected that the Chinese smart phone market will be further integrated.
“Because the size of the Chinese market is very large, the cost of marketing and channel management for mobile phone manufacturers in this market is quite high, and only a company with a certain scale can afford it,” said Analyst Mojia of Canalys. "Although Huawei, OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi must cope with the problem of shrinking market size, but with the further integration of the market, these companies will benefit from it." Analyst analyst Hattie He in a previous report This also confirms this view. The analyst said, "Millet is currently the only one of China's top five smart phone manufacturers concerned about the price of less than 1,000 yuan (about 160 US dollars) products manufacturers."
In the report, analyst Mo Jia estimated that with the listing of Huawei, OPPO and vivo's flagship smartphones, the Chinese smartphone market is expected to resume growth in the second quarter. The analyst also said that the inventory problems OPPO and vivo encountered in the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year have now ceased to exist.
“The new smart phones will of course entice users to upgrade their products, but suppliers will also be more careful to avoid oversupply in the channels.” The analyst also believes that because the smart phone manufacturers will refocus on R&D instead of marketing, the market will appear A short period of "stagnation."
