The Output Value Of Mini LED Chips in Backlight TV Applications in 2021 Is US$270 Million

Aug 02, 2021

During the CES Consumer Electronics Show in the United States in 2021, various TV brands such as Samsung, LG, TCL, etc. have launched Mini LED backlight TVs. According to TrendForce's Optoelectronics Research Office "2021 Mini LED New The "Backlight Display Trend Analysis Report" shows that with the technology gradually overcoming bottlenecks and reducing overall costs, the output value of Mini LED chips in backlight TV applications is estimated to be US$270 million in 2021.

Mini LED-backlit TVs have high cost-effective advantages, and the lowest cost is only 50% higher than traditional LCDs

TrendForce further analyzes that the cost competitiveness of Mini LED in TV applications at this stage is 2~3 times the cost difference between white light OLED and entry-level direct LCD backlight modules. The cost range of this part is Mini LED backlight display. Opportunity to cut in. At present, Mini LED uses about 16,000 Mini LEDs in high-end TV applications, and is equipped with 2,000 zone zone control, but it is still 15% lower than the high-end OLED TV panels widely recognized by the market, and has a cost advantage. Taking the product into consideration, by reducing the number of Mini LEDs to 10,000~12,000, with 500-zone zone control, the cost increase of it and the entry-level direct-type LCD backlight module is controlled within 50%. The same is true for Mini LED TVs. Another opportunity to strike a balance between price and picture quality, so this year, various brands have started a product specification war for Mini LED TV applications.

In 2021, the high-end TV market will adopt high-contrast and 8K high-resolution as the mainstream specifications. From the perspective of Korean brand manufacturers, the Samsung Neo QLED Mini LED TV and LG QNED Mini LED TV released during CES this year both use Mini LED as the backlight source to improve display characteristics. In addition to the 8K high-resolution display, the Mini LED backlight module is also used to use more than 20,000 Mini LEDs (dimming zones greater than 1,000 zones; peak brightness over 1,000 nits), with passive drive (PM) multi-zone control technology, Significantly increase the contrast ratio to 1,000,000:1, making the picture quality more detailed and reaching almost the same level as that of OLED TVs. At the same time, the land-based brand manufacturer TCL also launched a Mini LED backlight module TV with similar specifications, OD Zero Mini LED TV. This trend will also drive other brand manufacturers such as Hisense and Xiaomi to follow up in the future.

Mini LED chips, light source backplanes, and drive IC optimization speed are the key to high-speed industrial expansion

With the successive launch of Mini LED backlight TVs by brand manufacturers this year, relevant supply chain manufacturers will also benefit from this. At present, there are many major suppliers of Mini LED products. In the chip field, there are Taiwan's Epistar and Lunda; Lu's Sanan and Huacan, etc., and South Korea's Seoul Semiconductor. Detection and sorting include Whit, Shuttle, and Jiuyuan. The parts factories include Longda from Taiwan, Hongli from Luchang, Ruifeng, and Lijingwei. Driver ICs include Taiwan-based Macroblock, ELAN, Spectral, Himax, Novatek, etc., and Lu-based Jichuang North, Ming Microelectronics, and Fuman Electronics. The light source backplanes include Taiding, Zhending and Yongfeng from Korea; the panels are Samsung Display, LG Display, AUO, Innolux, BOE, and China Star Optoelectronics.

TrendForce Consulting believes that due to the current cost competitiveness of Mini LED backlight display products compared to OLED, which is 15% lower in cost competitiveness, in the future, it is expected to continue to lock in the relatively high cost part of Mini LED backlight modules for optimization, such as Mini LED chips, Mini LED light source backplanes, driver ICs, etc., to create a long-term development niche.
