Apple introduced the first organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel mobile phone last year, driving the OLED panel trend, but Peng Shuanglang, the chairman of AUO, publicly stated that the cost of building an OLED panel factory is too high, and the Korean plant has taken a lead. Peng Shuanglang believes that the industry model that Taiwan's panel makers are more likely to push is to invest in micro LED display panels and to first produce LCD panels using Mini LED backlights.
Xu Meiwen, senior research manager of International Data Corporation (IDC), said that the LED chips of Micro LED are very small and there are huge technical difficulties in the production process. However, Mini LED chips are relatively large and the manufacturing process is relatively easy.
Xu Meiwen pointed out that the liquid crystal panel with a Mini LED backlight source only replaces the existing LED backlight source with a smaller Mini LED, so the mass production time will be much faster than the Micro LED panel.
She said that the use of Mini LED backlight LCD panel is still "liquid crystal panel", which is currently common in Taiwan consumers LCD screen, you can use the traditional amorphous germanium process, you can also use low temperature polycrystalline germanium process, of course, can also be Metal oxide process.
She assessed that LCD panels with Mini LED backlights have the opportunity to mass produce at the end of this year. The slowest production may be before the end of next year. It will be expected to be used in mobile phones and LCD monitors.
The industry pointed out that in addition to Taiwan's AUO, Innolux to develop the Micro LED display panel, and will first introduce the use of Mini LED backlight LCD panel, the Chinese mainland panel maker BOE, South Korea panel maker LGDisplay, Japan Factory Japan Display Corporation (JDI) has also actively invested in related technology research and development, and has the opportunity to launch products like Taiwan.
