How Is The Classification Of LED Backlights Divided?

Sep 02, 2021

When talking about the classification of LED backlight, we must first understand what LED backlight means. LED backlight refers to the use of LEDs (light emitting diodes) as the backlight source of the liquid crystal display. Compared with the traditional CCFL (cold cathode tube) backlight, LED has the characteristics of low power consumption, low heat generation, high brightness, and long life. It is expected to completely replace the traditional backlight system in recent years.

Q: How are LED backlights classified?

Answer: According to the types of LED backlight technology

At present, the classification of this type of LED backlight can be divided into RGB-LED and white LED. The former takes advantage of the ability of dynamic partition backlight technology and the excellent light source of tri-color RGB LED. Compared with traditional backlight, it has a qualitative leap in color and contrast, so it is usually used in high-end TV products, and the general cost is more than 3W. The latter is a relatively common type of LED backlight, which is also widely used in notebooks and liquid crystal displays. White LED backlights usually take in light from the edge of the display screen, which is different from RGB LEDs and the direct back of traditional backlights.

Divided according to the incident position of the LED backlight:

LED backlight modules are divided into two categories: direct-type and side-type according to the incident position of the light source. They can be roughly divided into direct-type RGB-LED, direct-type white LED, and edge-type white LED.

The difference between RGB-LED and white LED:

RGB LED color gamut performance is slightly better, the disadvantage is that the cost is higher, the price of finished TV products is still difficult for ordinary consumers to accept; while white light LED light source, although slightly inferior to RGB LED in color gamut, but its relatively high contrast And the cost that technology bears is unmatched by RGB-LED.

The difference between direct type and side type LED backlight:

The LED side light source emits the light source from both sides of the fuselage, and the light is projected onto the panel through the function of the built-in high-transmittance light guide plate. The biggest limitation on the LCD thickness is the thickness of the fluorescent lamp, and the side light sources are located at the projection positions on both sides, so that it does not occupy the space of the TV thickness.

Compared with the side light source, the direct backlight LED can dynamically control the backlight, so that when the image of some dark scenes is displayed, only the necessary backlight area (shown as black or darker part on the screen) needs to be adjusted. Local lighting can show high-quality image effects with natural contrast between light and dark.

Objectively speaking, various positions and light sources have their own advantages in technology. Through different choices, different product demands can be achieved. However, LED LCD TVs are still in the lead-in period, and direct-type RGB LEDs do not have a good performance in the cost of the whole machine. Therefore, the edge-lit white LED is a more reasonable solution at this stage.
