There are two main types of LED backlighting: White LED's and RGB LED's. White LED's are the regular type of white LED's you see in torches etc. They are actually a combination of blue and yellow LED's in one. RGB LED displays have red, green and blue LED's, which combine to form the full spectrum of colour.

The RGB LED's are more expensive but they do have a greater colour gamut. They are generally used in more professional quality screens.
