Quantum Dots vs. OLED: Whose Display Effect Is Better?

After plasma withdrew from the market, OLED has gradually become a new high-end display technology standard. Many panel manufacturers have invested large sums of money in research and development and laying out product lines. Market research data also shows that OLED has a huge market space in the next few years.
Of course, not all manufacturers believe that OLED is the best solution. Liquid crystal technology is still the current mainstream and is constantly evolving. Among them, quantum dots are generally regarded as the most competitive new technology, so what is the difference between it and OLED, and whose display effect is better?
Technical differences
First, let us understand the technical difference between OLED and quantum dots. OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode), literally translated as Organic Light-Emitting Diode, has self-luminous characteristics and uses a phosphorescent color layer structure to generate light of different colors, instead of requiring a backlight like a liquid crystal screen. Obviously, the self-luminous characteristic allows OLED to have a better black level, higher color accuracy, and wider color gamut, so it has become the current standard for high-end displays.
As for Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diode, it is still an LCD screen in essence, but the backlight display is improved. To put it simply, nanomaterials are added to the liquid crystal backlight, and the blue backlight illuminates red and green quantum dots with different diameters to form the three primary colors of RGB. Compared with LED backlight, quantum dot technology can effectively reduce excessive blue light, thereby improving color gamut and color accuracy, and achieving an effect comparable to OLED.
Theoretically speaking, after the quantum dots are adjusted by the manufacturer, it is possible to achieve higher color accuracy. For example, the LG G4 achieves 98% of the sRGB color gamut. However, in terms of current actual product effects, the black level and color effects of OLEDs are still more outstanding. However, the service life of OLED is relatively short and the production cost is high. Therefore, the price of OLED TV in the market is high. More manufacturers are still waiting to join and expand the product line to reduce the cost of panel production.
Relatively speaking, quantum dots maintain the low-cost advantage of LCD screens. The cost of large-size TV products does not increase by more than US$100, and the cost of mobile phones is only US$10. Of course, when it comes to actual products, the price of quantum dot TVs is not as low as expected because manufacturers need more detailed adjustments and adaptation to image processing engines.
Obviously, quantum dots are currently the most powerful competitor of OLED. In the next few years, we are expected to see more outstanding quantum dot TVs and mobile products. However, before the cost of OLEDs is finally reduced to consumers’ acceptance, liquid crystal technology will obviously not take off from the marke .
