1. Edge-lit Backlight
Structure: LED lamp beads are arranged at the edge of the LCD panel (such as the upper and lower or left and right borders), and the light is evenly reflected to the entire screen through the light guide plate.
Advantages:
The thickness is extremely thin (can be less than 1cm), suitable for ultra-thin devices (such as mobile phones, ultra-thin TVs).
The power consumption is low and the cost is relatively low.
Disadvantages:
The brightness uniformity is poor, and there may be brightness differences between the edge and the center area.
Local dimming cannot be achieved, the contrast is low, and the black screen is easy to be white.
Application scenarios: low-end TVs, monitors, mobile phones, tablets and other devices with high thickness requirements.

2. Direct-lit Backlight
Structure: LED lamp beads are evenly distributed behind the LCD panel and emit light directly to the screen. Some high-end products are equipped with optical diaphragms or partitioned light control technology.
Advantages:
The brightness uniformity is good, and the picture quality can be improved by increasing the number of lamp beads.
Supports zoned light control (dividing the backlight into multiple independent zones and controlling the brightness separately), significantly improves contrast (up to 100,000:1 or more), purer black, and better HDR effect.
Disadvantages:
Thickness is large (usually 2-5cm), and the weight of the device increases.
High power consumption and cost (more lamp beads and light control circuits are required).
Subdivision types:
Traditional direct-down type: fewer lamp beads, fewer zoned light control areas (such as dozens of zones).
Mini LED direct-down type: uses smaller LED lamp beads (diameter 50-200μm), the number of lamp beads can reach thousands, the number of zones is increased to hundreds or even thousands of zones, and the brightness and contrast are close to the OLED level.
Micro LED direct-down type: The LED size is smaller (<50μm), and theoretically higher resolution and pixel-level light control can be achieved, but it is still in the research and development and initial commercialization stage, and the cost is extremely high.
