What is a quantum dot display?

Quantum dot (QD) displays are devices that use fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals (also called quantum dots)

as part of the panel architecture to generate monochromatic light to provide adjustable primary colors and improve screen efficiency and performance.

This can be achieved in two basic ways:

Photoluminescence (PL)-where the quantum dots are activated by a light source, for example, in an LED-backlit liquid crystal display, the quantum dots are activated by a blue backlight.

Electroluminescence (EL)-where quantum dots are embedded in each pixel and activated and controlled by electric current.

Quantum dots enhancement film QLED backlight structure:

The implementation with a film can be used on an edge LED as well as direct LED backlighting.  for example. Again,

blue LEDs are used instead of white LEDs. The foil with quantum dots (QDEF: quantum dots enhancement film) is applied

over the entire surface of the backlight and again consists of red and green quantum dots. Together with the blue LEDs,

it generates the desired white light.
