Function and Principle
Function: It is mainly used to convert point light source or line light source into soft and uniform surface light source, reduce glare and shadow, provide a more comfortable lighting environment, and also can shield the light source dot matrix, making the appearance of the lamp more beautiful.
Principle: Through chemical or physical means, the physical phenomenon of refraction, reflection and scattering occurs when light encounters two media with different refractive indices on the way. By adding inorganic or organic light diffusers to the base material, or by arranging the array of micro-feature structures on the surface of the base material, the light is artificially adjusted to refract, reflect and scatter in different directions, thereby changing the route of light and achieving full dispersion of incident light to produce the effect of optical diffusion.

Common materials and features
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) diffuser
Optical properties: It has high haze, high transmittance and high diffusion, and can effectively convert point or line light sources into soft and uniform surface light sources. On the premise of achieving good transmittance, it has good light source dot matrix shielding.
Physical properties: light weight, not easy to break, high mechanical strength, good wear resistance, excellent dimensional stability, and small water absorption warping.
Weather resistance: In the accelerated ultraviolet aging test, it is not easy to yellow and has good weather resistance.
Processing performance: easy to process and shape, and can be made into lamp parts of various shapes and sizes through hot bending, injection molding and other processes

 

Polycarbonate (PC) diffusion sheet
Optical properties: It has high diffusion, high haze, and high transmittance. It can effectively convert point or line light sources into soft and uniform surface light sources, and it also has anti-glare function.
Physical properties: It has extremely strong impact resistance, which is 250 times stronger than ordinary glass plates, more than 150 times stronger than tempered glass, and 30 times stronger than acrylic plates. It is not easy to break in various accidents; it is light in weight, with a density of 1.2 and a weight of only 1/2 of that of glass, which is convenient for construction and installation.
Weather resistance: It has good UV resistance and weather resistance, and can be used for a long time in different outdoor environments.
Processing performance: It is easy to process, can be hot-bent and thermoformed, and has no effect on material properties

 

Polystyrene (PS) diffuser
Optical properties: It has a certain haze, transmittance and refractive index, and can effectively convert point or line light sources into soft and uniform surface light sources. Under the premise of good transmittance, it has the shielding property of light source dot matrix.
Physical properties: The specific gravity is only 1.047-1.049, and the transmittance is 87% when fully transparent. It is the second most transparent material in plastic with a refractive index second only to PC, but it is brittle and very easy to crack in extreme cold.
Weather resistance: Poor, very easy to turn yellow, generally suitable for indoor short-term use lamps.
Economical: The price is relatively affordable, which greatly reduces the transportation cost, so it is widely used in some cost-sensitive lamp products.

FAQ

1.Is it better if the light transmittance of the diffuser is higher? ​
No. Although high light transmittance allows more light to pass through, it may cause the light source matrix to be visible and glare to be obvious. A suitable diffuser needs to balance high light transmittance and high haze, which can not only ensure sufficient light output, but also evenly disperse the light, shield the light source, and create a comfortable lighting effect. For example, in home lighting, a diffuser with a light transmittance of 70%-85% and a haze of 60%-90% can take into account both soft and bright light. ​

2.Do diffusers of different materials have the same service life? ​
No. PMMA diffusers have good weather resistance and are not easy to yellow. They have a long service life of 5-8 years in indoor and outdoor environments; PC diffusers are impact-resistant and UV-resistant, and can be used for 5-10 years in harsh outdoor environments; PS diffusers have poor weather resistance and are easy to turn yellow. They are mostly used for indoor short-term use products, and their service life is usually 2-3 years; PP diffusers have relatively stable performance and a service life of about 3-5 years when used indoors.​

3.Does the diffuser of a lamp affect the color temperature of the light? ​
It generally does not directly change the color temperature of the light, but it may have a certain impact. Some diffuser materials and surface treatment processes will have a slight filtering effect on the light, which may cause the color temperature to fluctuate from a few K to tens of K, but this change is usually difficult to detect with the naked eye. Only in professional lighting scenes with extremely high color temperature requirements, you need to carefully choose a diffuser. ​

4.How to clean the diffuser of a lamp? ​
When cleaning, first turn off the power of the lamp and gently wipe the dust on the surface with a soft dry cloth. If there are stubborn stains, dilute the neutral detergent, wipe it gently with a soft cloth dipped in the solution, then wipe it with a soft cloth soaked in clean water, and finally dry it with a dry cloth. Avoid using rough cloth or corrosive detergents to prevent scratching or damage to the surface of the diffuser and affect the optical performance. ​

5.Can the diffuser of a lamp be cut and installed by yourself? ​
If you have the corresponding tools and operating experience, you can cut and install it by yourself. When cutting, carefully cut with a ruler and utility knife according to the size of the lamp, or use professional equipment such as laser cutting machines and CNC engraving machines to ensure neat edges. When installing, fix the lamp correctly according to the instructions of the lamp to avoid gaps or loose installation, which will affect the lighting effect and safety. If you are not sure about the operation, it is recommended to seek help from professionals.
